Figure Reviews: 15mm AWI
Figures by Jeff Valent

I just received my order from Jeff Valent Studios for an AWI "Piquet" army set (one British, one Continental). These are marketed under the “Washington’s Wars” brand name. They are available from Legends-In-Time or direct from Jeff Valent Studios. The set cost $50. My order took about 5 weeks to arrive, but I had been told right away that it would take a while. I received an email when my order shipped. Everything arrived well packed, undamaged, and nicely sorted and labeled. The figures have a little flash easily removed with clippers or knife. Here's what I got:

BRITISH ARMY

  • 4 Packs Line Infantry each containing 12 figures - 9 infantry in 2 poses and a 3 man command set
  • 1 Pack Highlanders containing 12 figures - 9 infantry in 2 poses and a 3 man command set
  • 2 Packs Grenadiers each containing 12 figures - 9 infantry in 2 poses and a 3 man command set
  • 2 Packs Light Infantry each containing 12 figures - 9 infantry in 2 poses and a 3 man command set
  • 1 pack of Dragoons containing 8 mounted figures - all identical poses
  • 2 Medium guns w/crew
  • 2 Light Guns w/crew
  • 1 Mounted Command Set of 3 figures

CONTINENTAL ARMY

  • 5 Packs Line Infantry each containing 12 figures - 9 infantry in 2 poses and a 3 man command set
  • 2 Packs Minutemen each containing 12 figures in 2 poses
  • 2 packs Light Infantry each containing 12 figures -  9 infantry in 2 poses and a 3 man command set
  • 1 pack of Dragoons containing 8 mounted figures - all identical poses
  • 2 Medium guns w/crew
  • 2 Light Guns w/crew
  • 1 Mounted Command Set of 3 figures

Grand Total: 216 Infantry, 16 Cavalry, 6 Mounted Command, 8 Guns w/crew. That averages to about $0.17 per figure! (Normal packs are $9 per 50 or $0.18 per foot figure)

The overall quality is excellent. The figures measure exactly 15mm from boot sole to eye. The anatomical proportions are very good and all the parts and joints are the right size and in the right place. The detail is very good on muskets, equipment and faces. Details like turnbacks and cuffs are raised for the most part, but moderately so. The poses are likewise solid (though if you like all your units to have the same pose you may have an issue). The horses are also very good - well sculpted, nicely detailed. The saddles and equipment are part of the horse, not the rider.

If you want to get into the AWI, here's a great deal. Frankly, I think Jeff could charge twice as much and they would still be a steal!
