Battlefield In A Box:
Lessons Learned

What would I do differently?

Now that the project is completed I look back and see there are a few things I will do differently next time. I want to do a “blasted planet” box because my next set of rules will be a SciFi book. Here they are in no particular order:

  • The Hinge: Instead of making the center piece about 2” wide, I would have made it wide enough to act as a “lid” for my army trays. It would have pushed the gaps apart making them slightly less offensive, and it would allow that piece of foam to do double duty inside the box.
  • I would flock the main parts of the ground before gluing them in to the box. That way if one gets screwed up I just start over with a piece of foam - no big deal.
  • I have looked for a good way to treat the inside edges of the box. The lid is the problem. Anything you add has to be either paint or paper. I tried blue foam to act like sky but it prevented the lid from closing. I tried using photos of cloudy sky but it proved difficult to get glued in place without making a bit of a mess (perhaps do that before any foam gets glued in?).
  • The thing sheds a bit. I’m nervous about doing a spray as the box is paper, and not sure of the chemicals in the spray might melt some of the foam. But I am going to wait for a nice day and take it out on the balcony and give it a blast of canned compressed air to get as much of as possible.
  • You’ll definitely need some white glue the first few times you use it. I’ve used it three times for some in home play testing and already some flock and foliage needs replacing. Nothing major, but be prepared. I might even bring a tiny bottle of white glue in the box with me if I were going to be somewhere that didn’t have a 24 hour drug store nearby!

Otherwise, I’m really happy with how this whole project turned out!
