Review: Paint Brushes from
Miniature Lovers.com

I have been using a set of “Miniatures Lovers” brand paint brushes for several months now. They were provided for me to review, and were shipped all the way from Sri Lanka. Upon opening the box I was not overly impressed. In shipping several of the protective plastic tip covers had fallen off, leaving me with slightly frayed bristles. Good thing first impressions don’t always count. At least not with brushes! A little water and soap set the bristles to rights, and they are all in fine shape today.

It took me a while (as it always does) to learn how to get good performance out of these brushes. I had been using the Vallejo synthetics up to that point, which in my experience were much finer tipped, but much stiffer. The ML brushes appeared to have a blunter point and were much softer. Consequently, techniques learned with one brush did not translate to another. These had to be drier to dry brush for example. Also, they tended to work better with more paint, when doing regular painting and highlighting work. While this required a change in control, it also meant less time wasted dipping into the pot of paint. That meant they were especially well suited to mass production work.

I did find their bristles a bit less fine than some others I own. Consequently I would not use them for especially sophisticated techniques like blending. I don’t think they would lay down a smooth enough layer to work correctly.

Of course, they were designed by the fine people at Fernando, the well known painting service. So if anyone would know how to make a brush that will last, it would certainly  be them! So far the brushes are about 8 months old and I can report they are all as good as new. They will be in my tool kit for a very long time.

One factor not to be overlooked here is that these brushes come at an incredibly low price. Ranging from $1.20 to $3.50 these are 50-80% less than comparable brushes from other brands. And that’s value that’s hard to beat! Definitely recommended!
