PERIOD COVERED: The War of 1812
THE BOOK:
1812 is a small pamphlet of 48 pages. It is a simple copy-shop job with a green card stock cover. The original text was printed on a dot-matrix printer (!) and the maps are hand drawn. In the center of the book are a number of templates for canister fire etc. The rules cover 40 pages with a brief overview of the armies and a few maps making up the remainder.
SCOPE: 1812 is a game of tactical combat of the War of 1812.
ARMY SIZE: Units in 1812 are on the large side - the examples use unit sizes of 24-40, though battles will require relatively few units. I’d estimate a good army would require approximately 250-350 figures.
BASE UNIT: The base unit in 1812 is the battalion of infantry or cavalry. Artillery units are batteries. A number of exceptions for militia and Amerinds are covered in the rules.
GAME SCALES:
Ground Scale: 1” = 20 yards (for 15mm figures 1” = 10 yards) Time scale 1 turn = 15 minutes Figure/Base Ratio 1 figure = 20 men, 1 gun = 1 battery Recommended Figure Size: 25mm or 15mm. There are charts for both 25 mm and 15 mm throughout the rules. Table Size: Not stated. Game Length: Not stated.
