I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. AB makes the best figures in the business. They come at a premium price, but they are a premium product. Their Spanish are no exception. Happily, however, other companies are catching up, producing well sculpted, anatomically correct, and appropriately detailed figures.

I am especially fond of this particular figure for two reasons. First I have a soft spot in my heart for that nation and, second, because the face on this figure is outstanding. On so many figures the shako and other parts can obscure the face. Here the pose and position of the bicorn give us a great look at the face. Even with this basic paint job (black primer, GW Elf Flesh, wash of Model Master Earth Red) the face has character and definition. It is this level of quality that one finds throughout the AB line, and not just on the faces. The folds in the blanket, the detailed epaulettes and boots, even the fire lock, all contribute to an outstanding figure.

This soldier is traveling especially light. The blanket is not rolled so presumably does not hold his possessions. He has no pack, no canteen, no haversack. A musket, a blanket and a cartridge box are all he carries.

As with all AB figures, the proportions of the figure run true. All parts of the body are correctly sized. Notice the feet (not too small) and hands (not too large) compared to the face. Similarly, the length of the torso and legs are in the correct ratio to each other. It is in these relationships that most figures fall short of the mark.
