Like the Essex brand, the Minifigs I have seen have a very distinct style that is immediately recognizable. Comic-book poses, limited variety, moderate but crisp detail and decent anatomical proportions are the trademarks of the Minifig.

The first thing that always strikes me about Minifigs are the poses. Just what is this bloke up to? He’s lunging at something, that’s clear enough, but imagine what a unit of 24 such figures would look like! It may give a good impression on the gaming table but in isolation it looks absurd to me.

The second thing I noticed about this particular figure is the relative lack of equipment. No blanket, no pack, no canteen - just a cartridge box. Could it be this figure is retreating and attempting to force some person or animal out of his way with his bayonet? The Spaniards did have a habit of throwing away every piece of equipment on retreat (even their uniforms in some cases).

However, if you can appreciate this stlye, I think you’ll like this figure. The details are easy to pick out, and I find Minifigs are accordingly easy and quick to paint. You never have to piece the figure together wondering which strap is which, or what that lump is.

But if you don’t like this look, spend your dollars elsewhere.
