Hills are one of the simplest kinds of terrain to make. So for the Battlefield In A Box, the question was really simple: custom boxes or modular? While I may do a custom box at some point where the terrain is part of the base box with hills and rivers actually part of the ground, this box requires modular hills that can be placed around as needed.
The only real challenge was to find a suitable material to make the hills from. I have lots of 1/2” styrofoam lying around but in this scale they are far too thick. Hills here should probably be a quarter or an eighth of an inch thick for them to look in scale. Foam core is cheap and plentiful, but I didn’t happen to have any lying around. Plus it is a real pain in the a** to cut. But I did still have a lot of the “foamie” material that I used for the ground cover to begin with. This is 1/8” thick so to make hills I glued two pieces together, then cut to shape. As before the colors were scraps from the craft bin. If I were buying foam I would use green or brown naturally. Two pieces of foam gave me a nice set of 12 hills:

I was able to cut at an angle with scissors to give the hills a beveled edge. The seams and edges were coated with a thick bead of white glue to smooth them out. The hills got painted with the same green house paint as the main ground cover. Again for speed use your ordinary 1.5” or 2” brush just like you would use for your dining room walls.
In the end I painted the edges a light brown color. This helps them stand out a bit when placed on the battlefield. I then decorated them with sand, flock, static grass, etc. Some were left relatively bare on top so that smaller hills could be placed on them for a 2-level piece of terrain.
