In my mind the Roundway range is the poster child for Simple In A Good Way. They invariably have a moderate level of detail with medium contrast, but very nice overall appearance. It’s a shame their range is so limited (just Austrians and French so far).
The detail here is moderate and medium contrast. The musket is plain with just a hint of flintlock, and no barrel hoops at all. The backpack is smooth and the bedroll unfolded. Otherwise everything is clear and crisp and a pleasure to paint. The face is clearly defined.
The anatomy is also good. He’s on the slender side (which I like - I don’t trust really well-fed soldiers - they never force march the way I need ‘em to), but well put together. His hands and feet are in scale, and his legs and torso in proportion.
The pose could use some work however. This is an awfully relaxed advance, and I know the Austrians gave Napoleon all he could handle in 1809. I’d like to see a bit more piss-and-vinegar reflected in the pose. Still, nothing really wrong with it.
Like I said, simple, basic, plain. But in a good way.
