First Impressions: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: whatever else Essex miniatures are or are not, they are very consistent in quality and aesthetics. The detail here is very good, and the overall appearance quite nice. The horse is average. Th e leg s are a bit sh ort to my ey e making the head and neck look overly large.
Dem Bones - The Anatomy: Essex anatomy in my experience is invariably “gnomish” - the legs are always too small and thin for the rest of the body; hands and feet are often out of scale. The same is true here - this officers arms are as thick as his legs, and his legs are too short.
Everybody Vogue: I’m not quite sure what this pose is supposed to represent. The officer is clearly going to produce something - a piece of paper for an order? a watch? a monocle? Meanwhile he has not taken his eyes from whatever holds his attention. Unusual, but I like it.
Do Those Buttons Read USA or USB? As always with Essex, the detail is moderate, somewhat pronounced, and crisply sculpted. The mustache, for example, is over-thick. I first painted it black and it looked like the poor man was trying to inhale a mole. Softened to a mid brown, it is much less noticeable. The horse is much the same - to the surprise of no one.
The Reserves: Other Figures
Is it just me, or does the neck on that horse just look way too long?
I realize this is probably not a good fit between horse and rider because the hand holding the reins has no reins to hold! I do like the horse’s pose - you men go get yerselves killed if’n you like. I’m just gonna to have me a bite...
