First Impressions: This looks like a big plate of scrambled eggs. There are bumps, ridges and shapes all over the figure that I can’t readily identify. They may clear up as I paint the figure, but right now I’m not sure what’s what. And I have not seen this kind of cape on any other figures or in my (albeit limited) reference. It could make a nice change of pace on the table if only it were on a nicer figure.
Dem Bones - The Anatomy: The trooper’s body is almost entirely covered by the cape so it’s hard to judge him. The horse is mediocre. The chest is too narrow, and the head too big. The legs are solid, and the hindquarters nice and strong.
Everybody Vogue: While I’m not thrilled with the pose - the rider looking down would not make a good unit en masse, even though in a vignette it might look great - it’s certainly passable. The curve of the horse’s neck is a nice touch. The rear legs, however, just don’t fit. They are bent as if getting ready to leap, but the front legs are in a walk.
Do Those Buttons Read USA or USB? The detail is often hard to make out here. Some of it may be my unfamiliarity with different equipment but there are parts of the figure I just can’t account for. For example, in the left hand photo behind the leg is a piece of cloth with folds in it. It’s clearly distinct from the saddle blanket. Is is a coat tail? I painted it brown and hoped for the best. The front blanket has no real detail - just a smooth vaguely cylindrical shape hanging there.
