Minifigs is another “true” 15 mm miniature line. As you can see, this figure measures in at exactly 15 mm sole to eye. Minifigs definitely have a slimmer build than many other lines and a very distinctive style, both in terms of pose, as well as the approach to sculpting detail. The basic figure and equipment are all well sculpted. But things like the folds in the pants and minor uniform details like cuffs or buttons tend to be represented in a lower key style. I think of it as a less dramatic style. On this figure for example, the strap for the cartridge box is etched rather than being a raised surface. Minifigs is a very consistent line, and I find I can spot their figures easily on the table. If you like this figure, you’ll probably like most everything they do.
Using Minifigs has another benefit, at least in the U.S. You can order them from Tom Dye at GFI, who is known to be just great to work with, and who kindly provided these figures.
Dem Bones - The Anatomy: The anatomy on Minifigs tends to be good. The overall proportions are sound. The hands are not too large and the feet are not too small. On these figures the faces are a bit geometric - lots of sharp angles and flat planes instead of curves.
Everybody Vogue: Rather than having every surface covered in folds and creases as if he were standing in a 90 m.p.h. gale, the drama in the Minifigs line is in the poses. The firing pose looks half way between firing and lunging. Their charging poses tend to look seriously off balance to my eye. (For example, see their “Flying Frenchman” as I call him.)
Do Those Buttons Read USA or USB? Overall the detail on Minifigs are kept to a moderate level. The goal, I think, was to keep the telling details without overburdening the figure with every minute piece of piping or lace. This means they are easy to paint, and always crisp when complete. Note: backpacks are cast separately. You can put them on or not, as you choose.
The Reserves: Other Figures: Here are some photos of other figures in the line, with some brief comments (primarily calling out differences from the above comments).
