The Stonewall ACW miniatures, also known as North & South miniatures, were kindly provided by Gary. The samples provided are of a foot command set, of which this is the lone infantryman These samples were the first miniatures from Stonewall / North & South I had seen. My first impression of this figure was - Holy Crows, Batman - it’s the scarecrow! Now that the figure is painted, I can see that it’s the very long and slender neck that creates this effect.
Dem Bones - The Anatomy: The anatomy here is flawed I think, but not fatally so. The neck makes for on odd character, and the face is mediocre (though partially hidden by the hat). The left hand looks rather too large. Otherwise the anatomy is passable - long and lanky, but passable.
Everybody Vogue: A simple walking pose can be deceptively difficult to capture properly. I think this is a near miss. The left leg is straight as a ramrod which gives the soldier a very odd gait. I can’t escape the impression that he’s auditioning for Riverdance, and the sculptor caught him in warm ups.
Do Those Buttons Read USA or USB? It is clear the goal here is an understated style. The canteen strap and belt are etched, while the haversack strap is raised, but just barely. The fold in the clothing are shallow, but run in the right directions, and look pleasing when painted. The musket is disappointing. The detail is hard to make out, and all of the surfaces which should be smooth, aren’t.
The Reserves: Other figures coming soon.
